The Long Game is about playing chess with your life, instead of checkers. It’s about developing a longer-term strategy for fulfilling your potential, rather than rushing into anything and making horrible choices that you’ll regret later.
The modern world, however, continues to prioritize short-term gratification over long-term success and fulfillment, and we see evidence of this everywhere.
There are the consumer and student debt crises, with people owing thousands of dollars (and sometimes much more) on their credit cards due to poor planning and impulse shopping. There are the billions of hours being wasted each day on mindless social media scrolling and the obesity epidemic overwhelming our healthcare systems worldwide.
What it boils down to is people taking the easy way out, doing what feels good in the moment but leads to nothing but trouble and dissatisfaction in the long term. As they say, “Hard choices, easy life. Easy choices, hard life.”
As I’ve said many times to as many people who will listen: Keeping the end in mind and making good short-term decisions is hard, but it’s nothing compared to the hardship of looking back on your one and only life with regret.
