Why You Can (Almost) Never Read Too Many Books
You can’t win. No matter who you talk to, you’re going to hear that (a) you’re not reading enough books, (b) you’re not reading enough of the “right” books, you’re reading too MANY books, or (c) you’re reading too many of the “wrong” books…and every position in between.
Everyone is going to have an opinion on the state and progress of your own self-education, with their advice trending to the idea that you should read in much the same way that they do.
They will usually advocate radical changes to your personal reading style, with a disturbing number of people harboring suspicions that anyone who reads a lot of books couldn’t possibly assimilate all that information in any sort of effective, life-enhancing manner. Therefore, they were right all along, and you’re reading too many books!
While, yes, I’ve considered the possibility that I’m just trying to defend my own personal, obsessive reading habits, I don’t think that the “you’re reading too many books” crowd has a really firm hand on the ol’ mental joystick, if ya know what I mean.
They are, in a word: crazy.
